Rolex have produced a number of different models, with the majority finding their origin within the tool watch category, each with unique differences separating them from other Rolex lines. Each model bares a different name, for example we have the Rolex Daytona, Submariner, Milgauss and many more. Your first port of call will be the dial, you can find the name of model either at the 12 or 6 o’clock positions. Many of these lines have been part of the Rolex brand for several years, so naturally there is a myriad of variations which include design, movement upgrades and materials.

Now it’s time to take a look at the reference number. Where you find the reference number depends on the age of your watch. For very early pieces, the reference number will be on the rear of the case back. Often you will find the reference number between the lugs (where the bracelet attaches to the head of the timepiece) above the 12 o’clock position. To remove the bracelet, you will need a metal pin or something like, to be able to push out the spring bar through the holes on either side of the case. More recent models, post 2002, tend not to have the holes on the side of the case so you would remove the bracelet by triggering the spring bars on the reverse side of the bracelet, between the lugs.

Rolex have a history ‘factory faults’ and minor changes to the dial which were only produced for a small period of time. This is where we step into niche, specialist territory. Although they may seem very similar, these small changes can make a whole lot of difference to the rarity and value of your watch.
